I got Molly's Aviator Outfit off of eBay over the summer, and I thought it would be fun to review it.
The outfit came in one of the American Girl's earlier boxes, a white one with a maroon band.
The outfit inside was wrapped with tissue paper.
LOTS of tissue paper.
Inside was the outfit and an informational pamphlet.
Here's everything that was in the box:
A closer look at the pamphlet:
A blurb about why Molly's collection includes this outfit:
The back (which for some reason decided to upload upside down) has pictures of all of the "short story outfits" that were available for the historicals at the time:
Molly's outfit consists of khaki pants,
a flight cap,
a "leather" jacket with a lovely quilted lining,
a hanger,
and a scarf.
The scarf is tagged Pleasant Company and is the only piece of the outfit to be tagged.
Yet the year is 2008, and Mattel had taken over long before 2008. According to American Girl Wikia, the outfit was introduced in 1999 and retired in 2006, so the year printed has nothing to do with when the outfit was purchased.
Kit agreed to model this outfit, and I must say: it is absolutely precious on her.
The cap frames her face very well.
The pockets on the front of the jacket are actual pockets, not just sewn on for decoration.
The outfit from the back:
Shoulder strap (perhaps to hold a cape? SUPER MOLLY TO THE RESCUE!)
The snap at the bottom of the coat:
And the top:
The cute little WASP logo:
The front of the hat is lined with synthetic sheepskin:
Overall, I give this outfit a 6 out of 5 (yes, you saw that right) because I am absolutely blown away by the quality and attention to detail put into this adorable outfit. At first, I was unsure about whether or not I should add this outfit to my collection but one came up on eBay for a fantastic price (I think I spent less than $20 on this when it usually goes for $50 or more) and I decided that, since I hope to have all of Molly's collection someday, I should get it. I was expecting a cute outfit. What I got instead was a beautifully made recreation of a piece of history. That is incredibly rare, even with American Girl outfits (especially since the BeForever revamp.) If you are at all interested in aviation or the 1940's or Molly or American Girl or dolls, find this outfit. You won't be disappointed, I promise.
It looks like an outfit for the cool girl type of girl.
ReplyDeleteI wish ther would be a version of it for my Mal aka Brenda to wear.
